GENEVA - As a major international conference on Syria gets underway today, vital assistance for millions of refugees and the communities hosting them could face substantial cuts due to a lack of funding, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is warning.
As the number of men, women and children fleeing six years of war in Syria passes the 5 million mark, the international community needs to do more to help them, the UN refugee chief said today.
“We still have a long road to travel in expanding resettlement and the number and range of complementary pathways available for refugees,” said Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
“To meet this challenge, we not only need additional places, but also need to accelerate the implementation of existing pledges.”
During a visit to the UN Refugee Agency’s headquarters in Geneva, Jolie urged staff to step forward and ‘say who we are and who we fight for and work even harder.’
GENEVA – Special Envoy Angelina Jolie today reaffirmed her commitment to refugees worldwide, telling staff at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency: “I am with you for life.”
Jolie visited UNHCR headquarters during a one-day trip to Geneva, speaking to hundreds of staff members assembled in the atrium.

BANGKOK, 15 February 2017 –The UN Refugee Agency, in collaboration with a prominent Buddhist monk in Thailand, Venerable Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi (V.Vajiramedhi), the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Khao Yai Art Museum and Hybrid Art Collectors, today launched an “Art Auction for Refugees” project in aneffort to tackle the huge funding shortfall for sheltering refugees worldwide.
Praya Lundberg, UNHCR Thailand's first Goodwill Ambassador, visited refugees in Jordan during 6-7 February 2017. Jordan has received more than 655,000 syrian refugees for the past 6 years. During the visit Praya went to Azraq and Zaatari refugee camps and also visited urban refugees in Amman city to visit UNHCR programmes such as Birth registration, shelter, hospitals, water system, mental support for refugees who affected from the war and conflicts, vocational trainings and youth activities.
