Dutch Postcode Lottery

The Dutch Postcode Lottery has been raising funds since 1989 to support organizations working towards a fairer and greener world. 50 per cent of the lottery’s annual turnover goes to charity. The lottery has steadily grown to become the biggest charity lottery in the Netherlands and supports 95 non-governmental organizations. Since its founding, the lottery has dispensed over EUR 4.7 billion to its beneficiaries, making it the world's third largest private donor to global charity.
UNHCR has been a regular beneficiary of the Dutch Postcode Lottery since 2002. Every year, we receive a regular contribution (currently EUR 1.35 million) and are further invited to submit extra projects proposals. In total, our organization has received approximately EUR 30 million, including 6.3 million in 2016.
Key stats and figures
Over the last 13 years, the Dutch Postcode Lottery has supported UNHCR both through core funding and project-based grants. Although most of the funding from the Postcode Lottery has been to support our organization as a whole (about 60 per cent of the funds), the Lottery has also chosen to give additional support to key projects, such as:
- Emergency response in Sierra Leone (2004)
- Projects in Nepal (2005)
- Emergency work in South Sudan (2007)
- Solar light innovations in Chad (2008)
- Large education projects in Dadaab, Kenya (2012)
- Shelter projects in Lebanon (2014)
- Family projects for Syrian refugees (2015)
- Education projects in 12 countries for 225,000 children (2016)
