Strengthening partnership in Kazakhstan

On 30 March 2015, UNHCR  started a three – day training for its main legal partner, the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law (BHR). BHR is UNHCR’s partner since the UN Refugee Agency started its operations in Kazakhstan in 1995. During  twenty years of cooperation, UNHCR and BHR have built a strong partnership and provided legal assistance to asylum-seekers and refugees.

Legal counseling is now strengthened with the training of 17 lawyers representing all the regions of Kazakhstan. The training session will focus on issues of access to asylum, refugee protection, solutions to refugees and stateless persons. The BHR lawyers  will  also work on the implementation of UNHCR Seeds for Solutions project aimed at prevention and reduction of statelessness in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

With this new training activity UNHCR will provide BHR lawyers with further knowledge on the asylum procedures in the country and international standards relating to refugee status determination.
