Ehlam. Refugee.Ordinary person living through extraordinary times

“Sports helped me to integrate quickly in Kyrgyzstan.”
Ehlam, 15 years old Afghan girl

“In 2007, I arrived with my family in Kyrgyzstan from my country, Afghanistan. I hardly remember my life in Afghanistan and consider Kyrgyzstan as my own country. I found here my friends, my hobby, and I hope to become a lawyer in the future. I am an average teenager, and I am fond of basketball. From 9 years old I started playing basketball.  Today I am 15 and I play for the Kyrgyz national basketball team. When I play, I feel my energy.  I believe sports make us stronger, more persistent and never give up.  Through playing basketball, I made many friends in Kyrgyzstan and they accept me”.

Getting Afghan girls to play sports is not easy. The Afghan families are traditionally more protective of their daughters.

“When I started playing, my parents warned me about the stereotypes in the Afghan community. You know, they say that girls should not wear shorts and T-shirts, or play with boys for instance. But my parents were very supportive and I overcame this barrier. I am proud of myself”.

Ehlam is 15, and a refugee in Kyrgyzstan. Eight years ago her family fled Afghanistan for fear of their lives.  Ehlam’s sister, 10 years old at the time, received a marriage proposal, but when the father refused, the family received kidnapping and other threats.  The father was physically attacked and his shop was destroyed.  In 2015, her family has been accepted for resettlement. Very soon she will depart with her family to USA.
