Providing Livelihoods

The opportunity to work and earn a living is one of the most effective ways for displaced people to rebuild their dignity. UNHCR supports livelihood programs to foster skills development and self-sufficiency among refugee populations. These programs also allow refugees to contribute to their host economy, creating strong social ties with the community.

Providing Technology

UNHCR’s innovation unit makes use of new technologies to improve services for refugees, both in emergency situations and as part of ongoing support. These projects include leveraging social media platforms to help refugees stay connected with each other and with service providers. They include solar power initiatives to increase energy efficiency in camps and the implementation of modern agriculture techniques to improve farming yields.

Providing Cash Assistance

Most refugees live in places where they have access to markets and services in the same way that local communities do. Providing refugees with cash, by way of a secure biometric system, enables them to make decisions about their personal needs. This also helps prevent refugees being forced into desperate measures such as undertaking dangerous journeys, taking children out of school or survival sex. Cash assistance also helps refugees to support the local economy, aiding social integration.
