Joint Verification and Profiling Exercise aimed at deeper knowledge of the needs of refugees

From November - December 2011, Migration Police Committee under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and UNHCR conducted a Joint Verification and Profiling Exercise of asylum-seekers and refugees registered with the Government and UNHCR in all locations in Kazakhstan. In total, more than 650 persons were verified by the Migration Police Committee and UNHCR.

The objective of the exercise was to have updated, complete, and reliable data of asylum- seekers and refugees in Kazakhstan. The data will provide the Government and UNHCR with complete and comprehensive data on the needs of refugees and asylum- seekers to improve the response of the Government and UNHCR to their needs. The results will be used as a basis for implementing joint projects and strategies to enhance refugee protection in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

"The most important aspect of the verification is that having all the relevant information on education, work experience, bio and demographic data, will allow us to better meet the demands of refugees and find appropriate vocational trainings for further employment," underlined Saber Azam, UNHCR Regional Representative/Regional Coordinator for Central Asia.

Verification is the continual updating of existing registration data of asylum-seekers and refugees. Currently UNHCR is presently supporting the Government in developing an asylum-seeker and refugee database, which will enhance the capacity of the State authorities in obtaining comprehensive knowledge of the refugee and asylum-seeker population.
