Ethiopia. The South Sudanese youngster with big dreams

“All I can think of is finishing school.”

Nyahok Reath, 17, sits in her family's shelter at Kule refugee camp in Ethiopia. She has lived here since June 2014 when her family escaped the conflict in South Sudan.

Background Information:

Nyahok Reath was a star student at her primary school and had her heart set on becoming a pilot. But forced displacement due to conflict means her schooling and life ambitions have been put on hold. Before she fled her home in Nasser, in South Sudan's Upper Nile State with her family, Nyahok would watch UN aircraft flying aid supplies in and out of the nearby airport. Now a resident of Kule refugee camp in Gambella, Ethiopia, Nyahok, 17, has slim chances of completing secondary school in an underdeveloped region where just 12 per cent of refugee children have secondary school places. Her hopes were raised when an uncle living in Kenya offered to pay her secondary school fees, but after only six months in Nairobi, her uncle ran out of money and she returned to the camp. Of the more than 1.8 million people who have fled South Sudan, 62 per cent are under the age of 18.
