South Sudan. Khadija's education story

“My parents tell all our neighbours that I can speak English.”

Sudanese schoolgirl Khadija, 12, started her very first school year in 2016 when UNHCR and Save the Children International created the Literacy Booth Program to improve refugee children’s reading skills in both Arabic and English.

Background Information:

Twelve-year-old Khadija dreams of being a teacher one day in her village back in Sudan. Growing up back home, she couldn’t dream of going to school. She and her family lived in an isolated area, two hours walk from the nearest school. But still, she was happy with her family until armed groups came and destroyed their hometown in Blue Nile state. After burning down their house and farm, Khadija’s family were forced to leave or risk starving to death. She walked days and nights to reach Maban in South Sudan. Since 2013, Doro refugee camp has become her home, along with 56,000 other Sudanese refugees.
