Uganda. The overcrowded school educating South Sudanese refugees

Deputy headteacher Patric Abale teaches a class at Yangani Progressive Primary School in Yumbe District, northern Uganda. Abale says the school has over 5,000 registered pupils, including many who escaped the conflict in neighbouring South Sudan.

Background Information:

Deputy headteacher, Patric Abale, told UNHCR that his teaching staff are struggling to cope with class sizes at the UNHCR-supported Yangani school, located in Bidibidi settlement on the Uganda-South Sudan border. Uganda’s progressive approach to refugee integration means South Sudanese children have full access to the education system, while their parents have the right to work and are often given plots of land to build houses. At a summit in the capital Kampala on 22 and 23 June 2017, the UN High Commissioner For Refugees Filippo Grandi recognised the Ugandan Government’s generosity in hosting nearly 1.3 million refugees and urged international support so that the country can continue providing education, healthcare and livelihoods to those fleeing violence. Of the 1.87 million who have fled South Sudan since the conflict reignited in July 2016, more than 800,000 are living in Uganda. A further 1.9 million South Sudanese are internally displaced.
