Mixed Migration

Refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, migrants, women and children or other people in need of protection increasingly moving across borders in search for protection or better opportunities in nowadays globalized world. The UNHCR, the International Organization for Migration and OSCE aware of this multi-layered process started to address the mixed migration phenomenon in Central Asia through a consultative process. The key step on the construction of this process was the organization of the Almaty Conference in March 2011, with delegates from the whole region plus neighbouring countries which resulted in The Almaty Declaration on refugee protection and mixed migration in Central Asia. The Almaty process aims to provide a reliable regional forum to address problems raised by population movements. It also aims to analyse movements and develop a comprehensive strategy at the national, regional and international level. Consequently if will improve the protection of people on the move while ensuring security and preserving the interests of states of the region.
