On April 27, 2011 Turkmenistan was elected by ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) as a new member of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee (ExCom).

Before the first December UNHCR successfully completed its emergency transitional shelter programme in Southern Kyrgyzstan which provided transitional shelters for more than 13,400 people whose houses were damaged or destroyed during June’s violence.
