Peru
In recent years, Peruvian security forces have at times responded to violent protests over mines and other large-scale development projects with live gunfire that killed and wounded protestors. Judicial investigations into grave human rights abuses committed during the 20-year armed conflict that ended in 2000 remain slow and limited. Threats to freedom of expression and violence against women are other major concerns.
