Please find attached various documents on the current situation of Oromos and members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) in Ethiopia.

The attached document from Amnesty International of 6 January 1993 provides information on the human rights situation of Oromos and OLF activists in Ethiopia. According to Amnesty International there were clashes between OLF forces and Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) security troops and large numbers of OLF members were detained, both before and after the regional election in June 1992 (Amnesty International 6 Jan. 1993; Amnesty International Urgent Action 20 Nov. 1992). Another Amnesty International document of 16 February 1993 contains information on internal flight alternatives for Oromos who are suspected of being OLF supporters. In addition, please refer to the attached articles from The Indian Ocean Newsletter of 6 March 1993, The Xinhua General Overseas News Service of 13 March 1993 and the BBC Summary of World Broadcasts of 3 April 1993 which report on the release of some OLF members by the Ethiopian government. For further information on the situation of Oromos and members of the OLF in Ethiopia, please consult Ethiopia: Waiting for Justice: Shortcomings in Establishing the Rule of Law of 8 May 1992, published by Africa Watch, and the section on Ethiopia in the Human Rights Watch World Reports 1993, both of which are available at your Regional Documentation Centre.
