Venezuelan Opposition to be Prosecuted

Venezuela's new constituent assembly has voted unanimously in favour of trying opposition leaders for treason, accusing them of promoting economic sanctions imposed by the United States. The decree described the trials as historic and said they were designed to deal with those who were acting against the interests of ordinary Venezuelans.

President Trump is visiting Texas where rescue efforts are continuing following widespread flooding. The tropical storm Harvey has led to a record amount of rainfall and large swathes of land in Houston, America's fourth largest city, are under water.

The Australian state of Queensland has removed the names of mountains and creeks that contain racial slurs from official state records. For more than a decade, community groups across Australia have voiced anger at names that they say are overtly racist or portray painful historical events that occurred there.
