Venezuela to Prosecute Opposition for Treason
Venezuela's new constituent assembly has voted unanimously in favour of trying opposition leaders for treason, accusing them of promoting economic sanctions imposed by the United States. The decree described the trials as historic and said they were designed to deal with those who were acting against the interests of ordinary Venezuelans.
President Trump is visiting Texas where rescue efforts are continuing following widespread flooding. The tropical storm Harvey has led to a record amount of rainfall and large swathes of land in Houston, America's fourth largest city, are under water.
The United Nations Security Council has condemned North Korea's firing of a missile over Japan, which Pyongyang has confirmed it has carried out. The US-drafted statement does not threaten new sanctions on Pyongyang. But the Security Council has demanded that Pyongyang halt any more launches and abandon its nuclear weapons programme.
