Anna and Pavel commence their duties on their new assignment aboard the corvette “Grad Sviyazhsk” as it sails into open waters. Anna takes a tour of the ship, learning about sailors’ traditions and superstitions such as why a woman on board is considered bad luck and why a crewmate would be thrown overboard. She also discovers the gory side of the mess room.
Meanwhile, Pavel has to fight his fears when he’s handed a live grenade at a military exercise. This is literally a life or death situation and he must conquer his emotions to avoid an undesirable result. Anna is then tasked with demining the waters around the ship. She discovers that when it comes to operating a heavy machinegun, she is a natural. But is she equally good at baking pies?
Later on, the two go to the mess room for a well-deserved dinner. While Pavel diligently debunks the myth that marines aren’t allowed a second helping at meals, Anna treats her fellow servicemen to some of her own cooking.
