"Every time I say goodbye to her, I’m expecting that she won’t be back."

As a fifth year of conflict begins, Syrians continue to seek safety abroad. But desperation is driving some to return to their war-torn country.

Muhammed’s eyes are fixed on his sister as she leaves, crossing the Tigris river from Iraq, and returning to Aleppo to finish her degree in English literature.

Despite the challenges they'll face, this border crossing works both ways, there are also people choosing to return to Syria.
