Joann fled the violence in South Sudan with her younger sister, Nancy, for a better life in Uganda. She met Joyce, who has adopted Nancy and Joann as her foster children. Together, they are building a home in the Bidibidi camp, while Joann hopes to go to school soon and study to become a doctor.

There’s nothing more human than the bonds of family, and even in the harshest conditions, people are driven to connect. Joann and her little sister tragically lost their parents and home in South Sudan. Leaving everything behind to find safety in Uganda, they found safe shelter and a new start. With Joyce, who also fled violence in South Sudan, they’ve formed a new family, and together they are building a home in Bidibidi, the world’s largest refugee camp.

This World Refugee day UNHCR wants to show how the world is standing with refugees. Please sign the #WithRefugees petition and tell us about a project for refugees that you know about at www.withrefugees.org.
