Abu Luay is a Syrian refugee and chef living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia appeared at the FAME Festival to teach Malaysians about Syrian cusine. Their son Tarek works with them.
The Food and Arts of Middle East (FAME) Festival aimed to shed light in the lives of refugees through a showcase of food, culture and heritage of this individuals who mainly hail from Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Palestine. With little to no access to employment and education, refugees in Malaysia live in conditions that are not sustainable for the long term.
From the constant concern over a chance for resettlement to the perpetual worry of how to feed their families, the struggles of these refugees are an important lesson of how difficult life is for those who are displaced. Refugees often arrive to new countries with skills and knowledge that can enrich the host communities. This initiative uses art as a common ground to connect refugees with the community in which they live.
This World Refugee day UNHCR wants to show how the world is standing with refugees. Please sign the #WithRefugees petition and tell us about a project for refugees that you know about at www.withrefugees.org.
