Although not referring specifically to the expulsion of foreign workers from Saudi Arabia, the following information may be noteworthy. The Chicago Tribune reports that "under the guise of saudi-izing the work-force - though really to punish neighbouring Yemen for its fence-straddling in the gulf crisis - the Saudis recently forced tens of thousands of Yemeni workers to leave the kingdom" (25 Nov. 1990, 3).

According to The New York Times, the "Saudi officials say they are tightening controls on Yemeni workers in particular, because they assert Yemen has shown itself to be sympathetic to Iraq" (26 Sept. 1990, 2).

The Los Angeles Times states that:

[t]housands of Yemenis have left Saudi Arabia since Sept[ember] 18, when Saudi officials, irked with the Yemeni government's support of Iraq, cancelled all entry, residence and work privileges for 1 million or more Yemenis in Saudi Arabia. The order also applied to some Palestinians working here as well (3 Oct. 1990, 1).

Additional information on the above subject is currently unavailable to the IRBDC.
