Diario de Noticias
August 28, 2015, in Maputo, Mozambique
Paulo Machava, founder and publisher of the daily news website Diario de Noticias, was shot dead by gunmen in a white pick-up truck, while jogging in the capital, Maputo, according to news reports that cited witnesses.
A police spokesman told The Associated Press in August that police were investigating and had not yet determined a motive. Eduardo Constantino, chairman of Mozambique's National Union of Journalists, released a statement condemning the killing.
Before starting Diario de Noticias, Machava was a reporter for the state-run station Rádio Moçambique and the independent weekly Savana. Machava reported on crime and covered the killing of Mozambican journalist Carlos Cardoso, according to reports. Cardoso was shot dead in November 2000, according to CPJ research.
Motive Unconfirmed: CPJ is investigating to determine whether the death was work-related.
