For information on the above-mentioned subject, please refer to Response to Information Request CHN17937.E of 14 July 1994. Also, attached please find press reports of a 12 November 1992 hijacking of a MD-82 Chinese passenger jet by two men from Jilin who claimed to be pro-democracy activists fleeing political persecution (South China Morning Post 13 Nov. 1993). For further information on the pro-democracy movement in China, please consult the attached May 1993 Cheng Ming article reporting the release of the Public Security Ministry's "Report on Launching a Crackdown on Criminal Cases". This report, which may be of interest to you provides figures on the number of "criminal cases of a counterrevolutionary nature" committed throughout the country in 1992, and lists provinces and autonomous regions where more "serious" cases were reported.
