Please find attached a list of 23 people who were detained after the 13 May 1988 demonstration in Zanzibar (Amnesty International Jan. 1990; Ibid. 19 June 1992). Amnesty International added that there were more people arrested than those listed, and that numbers 24 to 27 of the list were injured but not charged (Ibid.). Please note that participants to the 13 May 1988 demonstration were unarmed and that two people were killed by police (Africa Confidential 17 June 1988, 5). Moreover, the Zanzibari Chief Minister of the time claimed that "the riots were instigated by anti-government agents based in Dubai" (Africa Research Bulletin 15 July 1988, 8925; New African July 1988, 18).
