The State Committee for the State of Emergency in the USSR was the covername used by the leaders of the 9 August 1991 failed attempt to replace Mikhail Gorbachev as the head of the Soviet Union (RFE/RL 30 Aug. 1991, 1). According to the Los Angeles Times, twelve of the coup plotters were to stand trial before a military tribunal of Russia's Supreme Court on 14 April 1993 (27 Jan. 1993). All of the defendants were to remain in their cities of residence until the trial, in conformity with the terms of their conditional release (Ibid.). The trial was suspended on 14 April 1993 after one of the accused suffered a heart attack (AFP 5 May 1993). Some of the accused took part in the 1 May 1993 pro-communist demonstrations in the capital, in breach of their bail conditions (Ibid.).
