An historian and author of Mal djiboutien: rivalités ethniques et enjeux politiques and Djibouti: une nation en otage, who is familiar with the history and politics of the Afar in the Horn of Africa, stated that traditionally, the Afars are not inhabitants of Somalia (11 May 2000). However, he said that some Djiboutian Afars who speak the Somali language fluently live and operate businesses in north Somalia.
