Supporting a Displacement-Sensitive Development Plan for Turkey

The Solutions Alliance is enhancing its support to its governmental partners by providing expertise and evidence on development approaches in forced displacement contexts. On 19-20 October, the Head of Secretariat, Niels Harild, led discussions during a workshop entitled “Forced Displacement and Development,” organised in Turkey by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). The event provided 40 Turkish officials an opportunity to better understand and plan for the inclusion of displaced persons in their country’s development planning.

The workshop focused on best practices in promoting self-reliance for the 2.7 million Syrian refugees currently residing in Turkey and improving their socioeconomic impact, including on host communities. Participants were briefed on common barriers to achieving durable solutions for the forcibly displaced and the positive impact of development approaches in these contexts. They also examined models from on-going initiatives in the region, including the Regional Development and Protection Programme (RDPP) and the Lebanon and Jordan Compacts. To finish, participants discussed development responses to displacement that could be undertaken in Turkey.

The event is part of ICMPD’s larger Sessiz Destek project to support the Government of Turkey’s Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM) in devising a development-sensitive and coherent Turkish migration policy framework. More information on the project can be found on ICMPD’s website.
