Information on military or guerrilla raids at the state University of Talca (Universidad de Talca) in September 1986 could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB within the time constraints of this Response to Information Request.

A staff member of the central information desk of the private Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile del Maule, commonly known as the Universidad Catolica de Talca, stated in a 3 December 1996 telephone interview that, to the central information desk's staff knowledge, there have been no incursions or raids, be it by guerrillas or the military, in the university campus in 1986 or any other year during or after the dictatorship. The source, who indicated that she has worked at the university for more than ten years (including 1986), stated that the only incidents which occasionally resulted in injured students were student demonstrations which usually took place inside the campus; the police sometimes tried to dislodge the students by throwing tear gas canisters from outside the campus onto the demonstrators inside (ibid.). These incidents often resulted also in exposure of university staff to tear gas (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
