No information on a demonstration organized by the All Amhara People's Organization (AAPO) held in February 1993 could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

However, sources report a demonstration by students at Addis Ababa University in January 1993 (The Scotsman 13 Aug. 1993; ION 31 July 1993; Amnesty International 1994, 130). For further information on this demonstration please consult ETH15998.E of 16 December 1993. Professor Asrat Woldeyes was one of 40 faculty members who were dismissed after the demonstration (The Scotsman 13 Aug. 1993; ION 31 July 1999). The Indian Ocean Newsletter states that he was the subject of a judicial inquiry shortly after this demonstration (ibid.).

The Indian Ocean Newsletter reported on 13 February 1993 that Woldeyes and two other AAPO leaders, had

been served with court summons on a charge of making comments the authorities qualify as 'incendiary' at rallies in Debre Berhan in July and December 1992. The chairman of AAPO who has in the past already had to answer to charges, faced these accusations and was apparently released, but the two other leaders of the movement are reported to be awaiting their audience still (3).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
