According to the consul at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) in Washington, DC, foreign women who are married to Yugoslav citizens may apply for Yugoslav citizenship on the basis of their marriage (12 Aug. 1994). However, the consul indicated that since the new citizenship law has not yet been adopted, the former Yugoslav law on citizenship is still applicable (ibid.). For information on foreign nationals married to Yugoslav citizens, please consult Responses to Information Requests YUG8228 of 25 March 1991 and YUG7985 of 21 February 1991.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
