In a telephone interview on 16 January 1997, an official with the Zurich Airport border police stated that for passengers travelling to Canada via the Zurich airport, routine passport checks are not performed on passengers in transit (ibid.). This rule applies to those passengers travelling from Singapore to Canada (ibid.). Passport checks are performed for passengers in transit only when border officials suspect a falsified passport scheme (ibid.).

According to the border police official, there are two or three transit lounges at the Zurich Airport for the use of international travellers in transit.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
