It seems pretty obvious to me that the decline in "civility" is a downstream effect of the decline of trust in American political institutions. I doubt that it's a cause of much of anything.

Trump claimed credit this week for creating 3.4-M new jobs in the 19 months since his election, a feat “nobody would have believed” in Nov 2016 since 4.1-M jobs were created under Obama in the 19 months before that, the claim makes no sense

I profiled Doug Jones, the surprise Democratic Senator from Alabama. Here's what it looks like to try and hold together a coalition of black Democrats and moderate Republicans in the deep south/Trumpiest state in the country:

The irony of the Trump admin enforcing misdemeanor unlawful entry because “all laws must be enforced” when he pardoned Joe Arpaio because he was “treated very unfairly” when he was prosecuted for blatantly violating a court order re immig actions should not be lost on anyone.

Made-up statistics that fact-checkers will rebut as soon as this briefing is over, disassembling, misleading comments, dismissal of real stories as "hearsay." Briefings don't work if the person giving the briefing is not committed to being truthful or intellectually consistent.

I think I'd rather have an equilibrium where there's less "civility" but White House officials can't claim to be "offended" at questions they don't like.

Why is this ad for learning English written in English? () a) it’s a political ad for the mayor masquerading as outreach Or b) it’s a poorly thought out campaign. Either way! 🤔
