According to the attached article from UNHCR Refugees, only three percent of Afghan refugees in Iran live in camps which are more transit rather than permanent camps. [ Annick Billard, "Integration a Priority", Refugees, November 1988, p. 42.] No mention is made of the situation of single mothers. The Iranian government has "virtually single-handedly assumed the financial and administrative burden for assistance". [ Ibid., p. 43.]
There is no information in the sources regularly consulted by the IRBDC as to whether Afghan refugees were forced into refugee camps in 1989. The attached article provides a fairly comprehensive picture of the general situation and treatment of Afghan refugees in Iran.
