The following information was provided during an 18 September 1996 telephone interview with a representative of the Embassy of Sudan in Ottawa.

An Egyptian woman who is married to a Sudanese citizen would be considered a temporary resident until her citizenship application is granted. As a temporary resident, the woman would have access to social services through the citizenship of her husband. An Egyptian woman who is married to a Sudanese man can obtain citizenship in Sudan. No residency period is required when citizenship is acquired through marriage. The wife's husband should make the application. The couple must provide their marriage and birth certificates, two photographs, pay a fee and fill out the administrative forms. The source stated that the fee to complete this procedure at the Sudanese Embassy in Ottawa is $CAN 47.00 and it takes one to two months. The application is sent to Khartoum for final approval. The woman should be present with her husband for the procedures.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
