Trends and observations on annual statistics for Ghana
  • About 50% of the persons of concern shown in the above table are living out of the camps.
  • Since the end of 2015, the PoC population has decreased by 31 per cent. This decrease can be attributed to the results of the Multi-Purpose Enhanced Registration Exercise (MERE) conducted during the second half of 2016. Predominantly, the MERE provided information on Ivoirian PoCs (some 5,120) and other groups that are presumed to no longer live in Ghana, owing to no-shows. These persons were deactivated in the joint UNHCR-Ghana Refugee Board database after a three month period. Some may have returned spontaneously to their countries of origin and others still, may have moved to another country.
  • The only PoCs still to be verified are the Togolese (mainly settled in Volta region), the exempted Liberian refugees, the Rwandan refugees, and a few exempted Sierra Leonean refugees. All in all, this group amounts to approximately 3,500 individuals. This reverification will be conducted in mid-2017 and will be coupled with the roll-out of the solutions strategy.
  • In 2016, 60 refugees including 52 Ivorians voluntarily repatriated with UNHCR's assistance. UNHCR and its partners facilitated the departure of 72 refugees out of a total of 97 individuals who departed for resettlement countries (including on private sponsorships).
  • The figures for Liberians include some 360 exempted refugees of Liberian origin, and approximately 1,000 locally integrated refugees of Liberian origin awaiting the issuance of their new individual documents confirming their alternative legal status. (The Liberian passport was endorsed with a four-year residency permit to live in Ghana).
