Church Charity Group Donates to Flood Victims

Dadaab, Kenya – A charity group, Peniel 12,  based at the Holy Family Minor Basilica church in Nairobi, Kenya has come to the aid of families affected by major floods in Dadaab refugee camp which has affected nearly 12,000 families.

The group has donated over 350 kilograms of food and other essential materials. The items included wheat and maize flour, porridge mix, salt, cooking oil, sugar, beans, bar soaps and mosquito nets.

The relief was distributed to over 250 individuals from the Dagahaley camp in Dadaab.

The floods, which started at the beginning of May and led to the destruction of homes, roads were destroyed which made them impassable, cutting many people off from being able to move to dryer and safer areas.

Mohammed Osman a father of 7 was affected by the floods. He says, “We don’t have enough words to express our appreciation to Holy Family . The floods washed away all our food. This donation will help me to feed my family for the next few days”.

“UNHCR is extremely grateful for every donation, all donations matter no matter how small. But we do need more help and are appealing for more support from the public, charities and other donors to support affected persons,” says UNHCR Community Services staff.

UNHCR estimates that nearly US$40,000 worth of assistance is needed to deal with the effects of the flooding.

UNHCR has been working hard with its partners to construct temporary shelter for families, and move them to higher ground. Host communities have also been affected and are being assisted too with temporary shelter, food, mosquito nets and jerry cans.
