Nujeen conquered more than the usual challenges when she fled the Syrian war. Born with cerebral palsy, the teenager made the hazardous journey to Europe in a wheelchair. Her defiance and resilience, recently documented in a memoir, have inspired millions. Now a refugee in Germany, receiving the support she needs to thrive, Nujeen has her sights fixed on an even brighter future.

Congratulations Malala on becoming the youngest ever United Nations Messenger of Peace, focusing on girls education!

Visiting a refugee camp last year, Malala said: "Refugee children have the potential to help rebuild safe, peaceful, prosperous countries, but they can’t do this without education📚" We couldn't agree more!

“I’m so proud because this job really helps me to be independent. I’m able to pay the rent for my house, to pay school fees, and buy clothes for my children, to feed them and respond to their needs without depending on anyone.” - Odette.

Odette, 34, fled her home in Burundi in 2010 after her husband disappeared in the turmoil ahead of the presidential elections. With her two small children, she escaped over the border into the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

At home in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, she ran a restaurant. That inspired her to do the same in Goma, and it has proven a great success.
Running a small neighborhood restaurant gives Odette back her pride and her independence.

These South Sudanese women are cooking their first hot meal after arriving in Uganda. They are among some 4,500 refugees who are currently at the Ngoromoro crossing point, which lies close to Uganda’s border with South Sudan.
Their home town of Pajok was attacked by soldiers on Monday, causing them and thousands of others to flee for their lives. Since then, over 6,000 people have crossed into Uganda’s Lamwo district.
Refugees have given horrific accounts of witnessing loved ones shot dead at close range, with many others arrested and then killed, including children.
Our staff are working with the Uganda Government and our partners to provide them with emergency assistance, including food, water, sanitation and health care.
Uganda currently hosts more than 832,000 refugees from South Sudan. Some 192,000 have arrived in 2017 with an average of 2000 refugees fleeing insecurity, violence and famine every day. Over 62% of the new arrivals are children. 📸UNHCR / Rocco Nuri #southsudan #uganda #refugees
Depression is an issue that deeply affects refugees - no surprise, given what people experience when they're forced to flee their homes. But there is hope.
Noor, a refugee from Syria living in Jordan’s Za’atari camp with her 3 children, told us how she got help to beat depression. “I had a beautiful, quiet life. But after the war started I saw a lot of horrible things; rockets and bombs. We were displaced inside Damascus, and that’s when the fear and anxiety began", she said. “The crisis has forced people to confront mental illness, but there is still a huge stigma around it. Many prefer to remain untreated than to seek help" .

Today, Noor says she has a more positive view of life, after receiving professional treatment in the camp: “My garden is beautiful, I enjoy working in it and it helps my mood. I’ve even started doing some community activities, like dressmaking. It’s not like the life I had before, but I’m trying to make the best of what I have.”

Yurany vividly remembers the gun battles that ravaged her family’s home in Chocó, Colombia.

Her story is nothing special in this region and like many other young people, Yurany wanted something different for the future. She and 139 other young area residents have found support for that desire for change through a first-of-its-kind programme that we support– the Inter-Ethnic Youth Leadership School .
The school, takes students between the ages of 14 and 29, and brings them together and forge future leaders. Students are encourage to propose changes that will make a quantitative impact in their communities, like reducing the number of teen pregnancies and increasing the number of places at secondary schools.

Branding refugees as security threats risks opening the door to xenophobic and racist rhetoric, and can even lead to physical attacks against refugees.

This is what our Protection Chief Volker Turk told the @unitednations Security Council in a meeting on counter-terrorism. 📸 UNHCR/ @gilesduley #refugees #UN #refugeeswelcome

Here’s your daily inspiration: 13-year-old refugee Omaima is the star of her community in Za'atari refugee camp in Jordan, because she is working hard to end child marriage and help young girls stay in school.
When Omaima first arrived at Jordan’s Za’atari camp in 2012, the 11-year-old refugee from Syria was not aware of the issue of early marriage. Then some of her classmates started vanishing. "When I got to sixth grade I started hearing about girls as young as 12 or 13 getting married. They would come to the school to say goodbye. I remember thinking they were making a big mistake, even before I knew the facts,” Omaima runs painting and acting classes to educate young girls and parents on underage marriage. Under Jordanian law, the minimum age of marriage is set at 18 years.
