According to a representative of Africa Watch in Washington, the vast majority of Darod and Majerteen left Mogadishu after the overthrow of Siad Barre (5 July 1993). The representative added that if any Darod or Majerteen remain in Mogadishu it is only a small number (Ibid.). A Ph.D. student specializing in Somalia at the Department of African Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), stated that a number of Darod and Majerteen returned to Mogadishu after the intervention of the United States armed forces (5 July 1993). Although unable to provide a specific number, the Ph.D. student reported that members of the Darod clan are presently in southern Mogadishu in the area under the control of former General Aideed (Ibid.). The student indicated that to the best of her knowledge, there are no Majerteen in this area (Ibid.). The Majerteen are located in the northern part of Mogadishu, where they are under the command of General Mohammed Abshir (Majerteen), who collaborates with the forces of Ali Mahdi (Ibid.). The student was unable to provide a specific number or assess the importance of the Majerteen in that area (Ibid.). Additional and/or corroborating information on this subject is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
