No specific reports on the Darod Gari Aba Yanis subclan including their relationship with other clans and areas of residence during 1997 and 1998 could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. Generally, Africa Confidential reports that the "the Darod are equally divided." The Majerteen/Darod faction, the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF) reportedly backs the Conference of Bari, Nugal and Mudug held in Garowe in February 1998 (17 Apr.1998). This conference laid the groundwork for a regional administration of the north-east, which was scheduled to be set up shortly after the conference. At the same time, fighting was reported in Kismayo between the Marehan and Majerteen, two other Darod clans (ibid.)

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please see below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
