Siyaad Barre's private physician, Dr. Mohamed Abdi Yusuf "Gaboose", requested political asylum in May 1989 in the United Kingdom. He felt he could no longer remain there because of the "pattern of personal and family government", human rights abuses, and the "inept management of the national economy". [
