The only documentary evidence of Mohamed Maidhane Warsame's arrest appears in the 23 January edition of Somalia Watch, a publication by on-governmental organisation focusing "on governance and human rights in Somalia" based in Umm Said, Quatar. According to this report, colonel Mohamed Maidhane Warsame was one of the five leaders arrested after a demonstration against President Egal in Boorama town in the Awdal Province. A 10 December1999 Jamhuuriya  news report corroborates the arrest of five leaders including, "former scholars, former military officers and former retired civil servants" in the Awdal region but does not specify their names nor the motive for their arrest.

The Somaliland government strongly opposes the Djibouti peace initiative and has reportedly arrested individuals who support it and detained those who attended it. Mohamed Maidhane Warsame is not listed as one of those arrested or detained (Jamhuuriya 14 Mar. 2000; Xog-Ogaaal 13 May 2000).
