No reports of distribution or display of literature or posters calling for a boycott of the 1997 presidential election in Iran, nor reports of arrests of persons calling for a boycott of the election, could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, former Iranian president Abol-Hasan Bani-Sadr, in exile in Paris, reportedly called for a boycott of the vote (Resalat 29 May 1997), as did the Political Bureau of the KDPI in a 29 April 1997 radio broadcast.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
