The 1 October 1997 issue of The New Sudan states that Abdel Aziz Ahmed Abdel Aziz, an administrative attaché at the Embassy of Sudan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, "has defected and applied for political asylum in Netherlands." The diplomat stated that he defected because the Embassy was allegedly being used by the government of Sudan to coordinate the purchase of weapons from arm dealers and manufacturers in Eastern Asia.

Additional information on Sudanese diplomats seeking asylum abroad could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
