Izmir – Last weekend (26-27/08), 11 teams of young migrant, refugee and Turkish entrepreneurs presented their innovative business ideas to IOM, the UN Migration Agency, in the hope of securing a grant. Under its entrepreneurship training and grants project, IOM is working to build business skills among young people, helping make their business ideas a reality.

29 August 2017, Rome: As schools resume next week in Syria, thousands of school children are benefiting from a food and nutrition education programme that is using school gardens to teach students about the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption as part of a balanced and healthy diet.

With around half of the Syrian population in need of food support and some 7 million people food insecure, young children are often the most vulnerable to malnutrition, which can have serious and long-lasting effects on their growth and future development.

Heavy fighting in southern Syria raises concern on the fate of some 45 000 people who are stranded in Hadalat and Rukban at the border between Syria and Jordan, with very limited access to resources and health services. It is estimated that more than half of those people are children, 80% of whom are affected by diarrhea that is threatening their lives.

  • Syria: During the reporting period, IOM teams provided 43,887 beneficiaries in Al-Hassakeh, Rural Damascus, Lattakia, Homs, Tartous, and Damascus with non-food items, health assistance, and shelter support.

  • Turkey: In July, IOM began a partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent to expand the opening hours of six Turkish Red Crescent community centres providing Syrian refugees with Turkish language courses during the weekday evenings and weekends.

  • 4,263 new refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants were counted in Serbia on 27 August. 3,938 were housed in 18 governmental centres (below chart refers), of which some 400 in temporary emergency shelters (i.e. rub halls or tents) in Transit Centres near the borders to Croatia or Hungary.

OVERALL FINDINGS: 1-15 August

  • 314 out of 1,183 ISMI-covered communities in Aleppo, Ar-Raqqa, Deir-ez-Zor, Hama, Homs and Idleb governorates experienced inward or outward movement of IDPs:

    • 37,025 IDP arrivals
    • 25,453 IDP departures
  • The evolving situation in Ar-Raqqa governorate led to the inward displacement of 6,616 individuals from Sabka (3,348) and Maadan (3,268) sub-districts to Karama sub-district.

The Cluster addresses the coordination of emergency Shelter and NFI needs and promotes household and community resilience. The Cluster supports people in need within displaced, hosting and non-displaced populations by ensuring that the different modalities of interventions (in-kind, non-conditional/conditional cash or voucher) abide by the do-not-harm principle.

I. Introduction

  1. The present report is the forty-second submitted pursuant to paragraph 17 of Security Council resolution 2139 (2014), paragraph 10 of resolution 2165 (2014), paragraph 5 of resolution 2191 (2014), paragraph 5 of resolution 2258 (2015) and paragraph 5 of resolution 2332 (2016), in which the Council requested the Secretary-General to report, every 30 days, on the implementation of the resolutions by all parties to the conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic.
