Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry is expressing confidence it can reach agreement with Iranian authorities to stop hanging Afghan nationals found guilty of crimes in Iran.
Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Shekib Mustaghni told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan on May 10 the Afghan government has been raising the issue for months in discussions with Iranian officials.
Mustaghni recalled just over a month ago four Afghan nationals were hanged in Iran but he said a new comprehensive treaty between Afghanistan and Iran would address the issue, changing capital punishment into life imprisonment.
On April 21, Afghan rights groups and religious scholars rallied in the eastern Afghanistan's Khost Province against the hanging of Afghan in Iran.
Speakers at that rally said Afghans detained in Iran were routinely denied access to a lawyer, or allowed to defend themselves in trials in Iran.
