According to Article six of the Constitution of Zambia (Citizenship), 1973, "a person born in or outside Zambia after the commencement of this constitution shall become a citizen of Zambia at the date of his birth if on that date at least one of his parents is a citizen of Zambia." For additional information on this subject, please refer to Article seven of the above-stated document.

According to Article 11 of the constitution, Zambia does not recognize dual citizenship. An official of the High Commission of Zambia in Ottawa states that, to his knowledge, there have not been changes to this constitutional requirement or other laws regarding Zambian citizenship (12 Oct. 1993).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
