The following information was provided by an officer in the visa section at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington DC in a 8 July 1998 telephone interview.
A woman who separates from her husband who has a work/residence permit in the UAE cannot retain her residence permit on her own if she is not working or married to someone who is working in the UAE. If she were out of the country for a period exceeding six months, the residence permit would automatically become invalid. She could, however, apply for a one-month visitor's visa to the UAE.
