An official at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Thailand in Ottawa indicated in a 23 November 1995 telephone interview that holders of Iranian passports require a visa to travel to Thailand. This information was corroborated by the November 1995 Travel Information Manual (TIM), a joint monthly publication of fourteen International Air Transport Association (IATA) member airlines. According to the publication, Iranian nationals are not exempted from visa requirements (Nov. 1995, 350).

The official at the Thai embassy added that Thailand does not have any special immigration regulations or rules for Iranian nationals (23 Nov. 1995). For more information on the Thai visas, including requirement for obtaining one, and their validity, the official faxed to the DIRB the General Visa Regulation, which is attached to this Response.

Information on whether holders of Iranian passports are allowed to enter Thailand as visitors could not be found among the sources consulted. However, attached please find a 6 October 1994 Agence France Presse report, which may be of interest. The report indicates that the Iranian government lifted a ban on travel to Thailand, in force since 1984 to prevent Iranians from visiting Thailand (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
