The information that follows was provided by a Senior Counsellor at the Embassy of Ecuador in Ottawa (28 July 1992). Additional and/or corroborating information from non-government sources could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC.

Foreign permanent resident (immigrant) visas can belong to one of several categories (investor, spouse, etc.). However, all immigrant or foreign permanent resident visas are valid for an indefinite period of time and there is no need to renew them, unless the holder of the visa is outside Ecuador for more than eight consecutive months. When an immigrant has been or will be outside Ecuador for more than eight consecutive months, a special permit is required to retain the valid permanent resident visa.
