According to Skytrax, the news bulletin of the South African Airways (SAA), the Lagos‑New York route was launched in February 2001 and closed in March 2002 (14 Mar. 2002). Airwise News reported on 13 March 2002 that South African Airways would close the direct air link between Lagos and New York effective 24 March 2002. The South African Airways Website shows that flights between Lagos and JFK airport presently go through Dakar, Senegal (SAA n.d).

Travel Page.com lists the airlines operating out of South Africa as Aerosafari, Inter-Air Airlines, Interlink Airlines, SAA Express, Safair, Sun Air and South African Airways (n.d.). South African Airways is the only carrier with overseas flights (Travel Page.com n.d.).
