In a 24 November 1995 telephone interview with the DIRB, the co-director of the Centre for Ethnic Studies at the University of the West Indies in Port of Spain gave the following breakdown of the racial configuration of the government and the opposition.

The director reported that the elections were won by the United National Congress (UCN) party headed by Mr. Basdeo Panday. The cabinet totals 22 members, of whom one is White (European origin), four are Black (Afro-Trinidadians), two are "mixed" (one of Chinese descent, one of African-European descent) and fifteen are Indo-Trinidadians.

The opposition, headed by ex-Prime Minister Patrick Manning of the People's National Movement (PNM), totals 17 members, of whom one is White, one is Indo-Trinidadian and fifteen are Afro-Trinidadians.

For general information on racial issues and the racial demography in Trinidad and Tobago, please consult the attached documents.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
